PERMIT INFORMATION

Does my garage need a building permit in Calgary?

Yes, if any of these apply:

  • Greater than 10 m² (107 sq ft)
  • Attached to your house
  • In the front yard
  • Does not meet location or design rules

We handle all permits. You don’t visit City Hall.

PROPERTY LINE RULES

In Calgary, you may build on the property line if:

  • The property is not shared with a street
  • Wall is fire-rated (5/8″ Type X drywall, floor to underside of roof)
  • No eave overhang onto adjacent lot
  • No windows or doors on the property line side
  • No neighboring sheds/garages within 2 feet of the property line

We check your property’s specific rules before designing.
