PERMIT INFORMATION
Does my garage need a building permit in Calgary?
Yes, if any of these apply:
- Greater than 10 m² (107 sq ft)
- Attached to your house
- In the front yard
- Does not meet location or design rules
We handle all permits. You don’t visit City Hall.
PROPERTY LINE RULES
In Calgary, you may build on the property line if:
- The property is not shared with a street
- Wall is fire-rated (5/8″ Type X drywall, floor to underside of roof)
- No eave overhang onto adjacent lot
- No windows or doors on the property line side
- No neighboring sheds/garages within 2 feet of the property line
